The park is located in an undulating glacial moraine and cliff area. It contains a combination of openings and oak woodlands. Forests consist of upland hardwoods and some pine plantations. The remaining grasslands are extensive and the oak savannas are being restored through an aggressive resource management program that relies heavily on volunteers. Wildflowers in the park include prairie pasquier flowers and woodland mayflies in the spring, butterfly weeds and puccoon in the summer meadow, and sunflowers and shooting stars in the fall.
